A Country Poised Between the Ancient and the Modern: Exploring Bhutan

Over March Break 2019, ALIVE Outdoors is very excited to be working with Good Karma Travel to provide a group from RSGC and SMLS with an outstanding learning experience in the Kingdom of Bhutan.  Travelling through Bhutan will offer students a rare and unique opportunity to see the last Himalayan Kingdom, which is said to be one of the most unique and isolated locations in the world.

Some of the goals of our journey are:
•To evaluate and examine our own perspectives and our personal values.
•To learn from and share with the Ugyen Academy Higher Secondary School students.
•To deepen and expand our worldview.
•To be immersed in a society that will contrast the difference in pace and values between a life centered in Western consumerism vs. intentional and unhurried living.
•To appreciate Buddhist cultural traditions and spirituality.

Reimagining Success

The Kingdom of Bhutan is a country all about happiness. This differs so much from most other countries in the world.

Back in Canada, I never learned to prioritize happiness. I was taught about how to be successful, but not happy. Success does not always equate to happiness.  No matter how much money you make, it won't make you happy. Before, I thought that success was all about making money, but after coming to the Kingdom of Bhutan, I have learned that success is so much more. Success is what you make it. It is about knowing yourself, knowing what you want, and taking strides to achieve it. This surprised me. I had no idea a nation could be so serious about placing happiness above everything else.  Bhutan has a surplus of natural resources, and they could easily grow their economy, yet they consciously choose not to. They value the natural environment and happiness over wealth.  There is so much to learn from this small country and their values.
