After a big travel day from Toronto, we continued on our journey to the Children’s Eternal Rainforest. The view driving through the forest to the research centre was incredible, from the valleys below to the mountains above. Everything we’ve seen so far is so unique, beautiful, and different from Ontario. We learned a lot about Costa Rica. One of the most impressive things was that it is home to 5% of the world’s biodiversity while being 0.00015% of the world’s land mass. 96% of Costa Rica’s energy is derived from clean sources. We drove past one of the main hydroelectric energy stations on our way to the Pocosol Research Centre.
At the centre, we were given a presentation about the various animals and wildlife that can and have been found in the reserve. We also learned about the history of the reserve and how a group of children made such a big difference for this incredible place. So far, we have seen a keel-billed Toucan, a White-Nosed Coati (also known as a Pizote), and a Great Curassow!
All of the food has been amazing and allowed us to learn more about common foods from Costa Rica. After dinner, we went over what we need to know for tomorrow. We will be going on our first big hike in the rainforest to observe and notice the wildlife all around us using our senses. We also had a quick journaling session to help us reflect on our experience so far. We are so excited to continue to learn about all aspects of the rainforest and the incredible experiences it has to offer. We are grateful to everyone who has helped and contributed to making this an amazing experience for everyone.
