Professional Resources That Inspire Us

The most valuable resource that we have is each other. Without collaboration our own growth becomes limited to our own perspectives.  These days, we are swimming in a sea of information. This page aims to bring together books, podcasts, videos, poems, art, music, etc. that may be of interest to the ALIVE community. If  you have something to share, please send it our way so we can include it as this page grows and continually takes shape.

Embers – Richard Wagamese

We believe that learning opportunities are woven into everything we do. Slowing down and taking the time to observe these nuances and lessons allows us to expand our perspective and learn from every experience. This collection of curated meditations focuses on lessons of joy, trust, harmony and stillness, amongst others, found in the everyday to-do’s that are so easily overlooked.

Crow Planet: Essential Wisdom for the Urban Wilderness – Lynda Lynn Haupt

You don’t need to go far to find wilderness areas peppered throughout our urban environments. Crow Planet reminds us that we can connect with nature within our suburbs and cities by observing the variety of animals, birds and ecology found in these spaces. Through observation and experience, we can strengthen our connection to the natural environment as well as deepen our sense of place and appreciation for it.

Comfortable with Uncertainty - 108 Teachings on Cultivating Fearlessness and Compassion - Pema Chödrön

This book was released almost 2 decades ago, and yet it could not be more relevant for everyone at this time in our lives. It offers short, stand-alone strategies to help us cultivate compassion and awareness, even during the more challenging times of our lives.

Broken Open - How Difficult Times Help Us Grow - Elizabeth Lesser

This is another one of those books that you may think was written for this time, but it has been around for over 15 years. It leaves a wake of things to ponder and tools to add to your toolbox of life. The author explores and sheds light on how to emerge with wisdom and strength from agonizing challenges and moments of fear and loss. There will forever be headwinds in life. This read not only is useful from a personal lens but will also be helpful as you further equip yourself to guide and support people navigating their own challenging times to come.

The Moth – Podcast (https://themoth.org)

Storytelling is an art that unites us all in a shared experience and when skillfully delivered leaves a lasting impression. The Moth is a non-profit organization who is dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling and connecting people through these united experiences. As storytelling is such a rich way of learning valuable lessons and connecting with others, we believe everyone should have more stories in their lives.

‘Invaluable’ - The Dirtbag Diaries – Podcast (https://dirtbagdiaries.com/invaluable)

The Dirtbag Diaries is a collection of adventure stories often sponsored and told by members of the outdoor community themselves. These stories and tales align with our values and focus in on the many lessons, learnings, reflections and gifts that the outdoors can provide us. In this episode ‘Invaluable’, when owner Abby Dione was forced to close her climbing gym due to COVID-19 restrictions, she would find out what value the gym truly held for the local climbing community.
