From the Rainforest Floor to the Research Station Classroom

Today started with a beautiful sunrise while we participated in birding before breakfast. During birding, we saw hummingbirds, a Toucan, and, believe it or not, Spider Monkeys! After another delicious breakfast, we got ready for our first hike in the Costa Rican rainforest, with the wonderful flora and fauna, ranging from tiny ferns to towering palms, from small frogs to massive birds. We could hear the sounds of cicadas and the calls of howler monkeys. We saw lots of interesting things, like millions of leaf-cutter ants, a brown vine snake, and a Great Egret. After we arrived back at the research station, we ate lunch, and we spent time with the biologist, Katherine, learning about the animals we saw on our hike. We researched one of the creatures we had seen, and used the scientific method to help us write educated questions. Katherine showed us the three main types of scientific questions: descriptive, comparative and correlative. We ended our day with a great dinner, shout-outs, team-building activities, and journaling. We are excited for another day in Costa Rica tomorrow!
